In the spirit of thankfulness: We remember Mrs. Julie Hawes Matthews

The family of Mrs. Julie Hawes Matthews honored the memory of their mother with a generous donation of to three FSU programs – the College of Social Work, the College of Nursing and the Department of Interior Design.

Mrs. Matthews, a 1952 social work graduate of Florid State was born in Tallahassee, Florida. She spent most of her time between Jacksonville Florida and Highlands, North Carolina, but was an ardent Seminole fan. While at FSU, Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Tarpon Club swim team and played an active role in the Methodist Student House (now the Wesley Foundation). She expressed her creative side through gardening and floral design.  At her first job at the First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville she met her husband Dennis, married in 1953 and raised four children.

Three of her children, twin daughters Lucie Matthews Patton (Interior Design, 1981), Leslie Matthews Kiely (Nursing, 1980) and Jefferson H. Matthews (Business, 1984) also attended FSU. To mark the one-year anniversary of Mrs. Matthews’s peaceful passing on November 24, 2012 from a pulmonary embolism, her family made the donation to the three Florida State programs to leave a lasting legacy in her honor at their shared alma matter.
