Fall 2012 begins a special international partnership in social work. The FSU College of Social Work and Jönköping University in Jönköping, Sweden collaborated to provide an exciting exchange opportunity for both universities’ students.
Doctoral candidate Jane McPherson’s research examines the area where social work and human rights intersect. Upon entering the doctoral program at the FSU College of Social Work, she was awarded FSU’s Presidential Scholarship, providing her four years of support from the University. In 2013, the Graduate School honored her with the Graduate Research & Creativity Award and the Graduate Leadership Award.

“It’s time to stop being politely angry,” said Leymah Gbowee, the Liberian social worker and peace activist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. Leymah spent a weekend at Florida State this month, helping students and teachers learn how to harness their personal difficulties and anger at injustice into positive energy towards change.
Starting this July, Dr. Neil Abell director of the College’s international programs will take on a leadership role with the Council of Social Work Education’s (CSWE) as a member of the Council on Global Learning, Research, and Practice for another three-year term.
“Ever since I can remember, whenever I would think about college I would think about studying abroad,” BSW student Breanna Kim reflected. “It’s something I always wanted to do.” Breanna started her spring semester of 2014 at Griffith University in South Port, Australia rather than on FSU’s main campus in Tallahassee. Spending her first few days in a youth hostel, she then landed a room in a shared house with two Australian girls and one New Zealander in Arundle, a suburb of South Port.
For Spring Break 2015, Drs. Neil Abell and Dina Wilke took ___ lucky BSW and MSW students to Grenada, West Indies for a unique international social work opportunity. The week included some time in the sun and on the beach, but consisted primarily of working directly with the organization Programme for Adolescent Mothers and the young women that it serves. Students got an immersive experience allowing them to reach out to and interact with local youths and to experience a different culture first hand.
The 2015 Leadership Awards Night at Florida State University honored individuals across campus that engaged in leadership learning. Leadership learning is the continued process of an individual’s acquisition, practice, reflection, and application of leadership knowledge, skills, and values. Through this concept of leadership learning each student, faculty and staff member can make a difference on campus and in the community, the ultimate contribution and outcome of leadership endeavors.
Through the Fulbright Scholar Program and a partnership with Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, Associate Professor Dr. Jean Munn will take her research in in gerontological and aging studies to a whole new level during the spring 2016 semester.
