Florida Blue establishes Social Work Scholarship at FSU Panama City

A substantial gift from Florida Blue will establish an endowed scholarship at Florida State University Panama City for students in the Social Work (BSW) program.
“Within health care, social work is so critically important,” said Hong Potomski, spokeswoman for Florida Blue. “In order to support that need, it’s important to us to support workforce development and work with organizations like FSU Panama City.”
Established with a $50,000 gift, the Florida Blue Social Work Scholarship will be extended to qualified students accepted to FSU Panama City’s Bachelor of Social Work program. The nationally accredited BSW program provides quality preparation and experience for entry-level practitioners who will work with a variety of client systems and challenges. BSW graduates gain field work experience and learn industry practices of helping people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives.

“By providing financial support for qualified students, FSU Panama City aims to increase the number of social work graduates who serve the Florida Panhandle within the next two years," said Dean Randy Hanna. After the devastation of Hurricane Michael and the scourge of COVID-19, Hanna said, residents of the Panhandle suffered trauma and loss that accelerated the need for trained mental health professionals in the region.
“To address this community need, FSU Panama City has prioritized the recruiting, admission and support of students majoring in social work,” Hanna said.
Students pursuing this degree also have the option to earn an MSW degree in one year through the advanced-standing program. For details, visit pc.fsu.edu/bsw.
