Agency Description

We are the only transplant program in Pinellas County.  We currently provide liver and kidney transplants.  Largo Medical Center also just recently started a mechanical circulatory support program, implanting left ventricular devices for heart failure patients.  They plan to start completing heart transplants in early 2020.  The Transplant Institue serves adults who are in end-stage renal failure or liver failure.  These patients are diagnosed with these diseases as a result of a variety of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis C, and cirrhosis.  Because there is a limited number of organs available to those who need them, it is necessary for an interdisciplinary team to assess and determine the candidacy of each patient.  The social worker serves as a vital part of this team and assesses all psycho-social aspects of a patient having an and-stage disease and pursuing a transplant.

Special Information

BSW and MSW 1st year and 2nd year/Advanced Standing (Clinical).  Full-time and Part-time positions available.  The student would need to provide their own transportation.  Although rare, if there are any off-site commitments, employees are reimbursed (not sure if students would be).  Our office hours are 8 am - 4:30 pm.  Our office is not open during evenings or weekends.  However there may be occasions where there is an emergent patient on a weekend who cannot wait to be assessed for transplant.  We are accessible by bus.
