Information

Our mission creates a community of hope, healing and compassion for those who are facing a serious illness and need safe shelter. We partner with area hospices who provide the professional care, we provide shelter and family type care. The majority of our residents have experienced homelessness, average age is 55. Age range has been 34 years-88 years old. The role of the social worker and SW interns include collaborating with the hospices and keystake holders in our area on outreach, referrals and admissions; case management activities such as help with benefits, finding family members, and help with health care wishes and arrangements. Social workers also provide emotional support by active listening and life review. At times we have to work on a discharge plan for residents whose health has improved. We ask our social work interns to help represent Welcome Home on the various groups we belong to- such as the Homeless Coalition.

Special Placement Information:

BSW Full-time, MSW 1st year, BSW Part-time. Welcome Home is open 24/7. We are flexible and work with our interns so they can complete their practice. It would be advisable for an intern to have liability insurance but our insurance covers all volunteers. Transportation isn't necessary but would make the work easier for all. We would be open to providing travel reimbursement for practice related transportation. Video and audio taping is only permitted with the resident's permission. A $500 scholarship is awarded when the intern completes their practice.  We have very little clinical opportunities (for example, counseling) for MSW Interns.
