The UVA Medical Center Social Work Department provides coverage for all inpatient beds 7 days a week from 08:00 to 16:30. The coverage is primarily provided by LCSW or LCSW eligible Social Workers with BSW’s providing support for none clinical interventions. The model of coverage for the Inpatient SW Team is a Clinical or “Pure Social Work” with emphasis on psychological and social barriers that affect a patient’s wellbeing and hinder a safe discharge home through the completion of comprehensive psychosocial assessments, providing brief counseling/crisis intervention services, supporting end of life situations, finding shelters for homeless individuals, assisting with the placement of individuals who cannot return home, and evaluating patient safety. All traditional discharge planning medical needs are supported by the RN Case Management Department.
The student will be required to work on site at the hospital for all hours worked, and will be responsible for transportation to and from the hospital including arranging for any parking pass needs with the UVA Parking and Transportation office. Students are required to have liability coverage. Video and audio taping of patients is not permitted. The Inpatient SW department operates form 8:00 to 16:30 seven days a week. A student can only complete hours after hours if they are being supervised by an Emergency Department SW team member as SW covers 24/7 in the ED.
