Shands Hospital and Clinics is a tertiary care facility affiliated with the University of Florida. It is a 64 bed, not-for-profit facility. The Department of Patient and Family Resources has a staff of 32 social workers, all of which are licensed or registered interns working toward licensure. Social Workers provide therapeutic intervention, crisis intervention, community referral, concrete services, discharge planning and case management to all inpatient services and many of the outpatient clinics. Social Workers are also involved in quality assurance and work on various hospital committees including the Ethics Committee. Settings include; Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units (adult and pediatric), Mother Baby Unit, Psychiatry Inpatient Unit (adult and adolescent), Medical Units (adult and pediatric), and Dialysis Units (adult and pediatric). Specialty areas include; heart, lung, kidney, and bone marrow transplants (adult and pediatric). Emphasis on person-in-environment.

Special Information:
Also Health Care. BSW, 1st year and Clinical MSW, full and part-time (part-time MSW only) placements. Part-time opportunities are limited and students must negotiate time and services. Students are responsible for their transportation. No reimbursement offered. Parking decals are required. The hospital is accessible by bus. However, a student may arrange to travel with the team ARNP. Hospital liability insurance covers registered interns. They are open 24 hours but the Social Workers hours generally are 8 – and 7-4. Weekends are available. A Stipend is available in their Oncology Department. Video and audio taping permissible with consent. Range of services include clinical intervention, community referrals, and discharge planning.
