September 15 through October 15 marks the observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating the unique history, diverse cultures, beautiful traditions, and rich contributions of Hispanic Americans whose heritage has roots in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Enacted into law in August 1988, the month is celebrated over 30 days to recognize the number of Central American countries that achieved independence in September and October, including Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras.

Hispanic American Heritage Month: 2024 Theme

This year’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme is Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together. This theme recognizes the many Hispanics/Latinos who have paved the way for future generations to be able to enact change and encompasses the spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity that define the Hispanic/Latino experience.

At the FSU College of Social Work, we recognize and celebrate our distinct cultures and heritages year-round.  During Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, as we celebrate our Hispanic/Latino alumni, community partners, and our students, staff, and faculty, we encourage you to learn more about Hispanic/Latino identity and history, participate in celebrations and festivals, visit art exhibits, read books, watch films and movies, and support Hispanic/Latino businesses.

Join us along with the Center for Health Equity as we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month with a tabling event featuring information celebrating the colorful cultures and rich histories of the Hispanic American community. Light snacks and Cuban coffee will be served.

Guest speakers and FSU alumni Dr. Juan Lebron and Mr. Roberto Torres discuss cultural considerations and community engagement strategies that can be utilized when working with Latin and Hispanic communities, families, and individuals using the theme of Nuestra Historia or "Our Story." Join us for this virtual event on October 9th from 1:30-2:30 pm. This event is a part of the Courageous Conversations event series, which explores social issues through discussions with FSU alumni.
