Rain or shine the College of Social Work was going to hold its first ever 5k run/walk and barbeque, Sunday, April 14, 2013. The race started and finished in front of the “Unconquered” statue at Doak Campbell Stadium proceeding 3.1 miles around the FSU campus, highlighting many of the most notable landmarks on campus. Despite the overcast skies and wet weather, a majority of the 110 runners and walkers registered for the race were at the starting line wearing the bright coral race tanks.

The event brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, community partners and friends to support the College’s “Tradition of Excellence” fund, which supports many of the College’s student-centered events and community outreach projects.

“The 5k run and barbeque is a new event  to support the College of Social Work’s continued community engagement.,” Nick Mazza, Dean of the College of Social Work, said. “We’re trying to use the funds we raise for community projects, and it’s good to demonstrate to community members that we want them involved.”

The race emphasized the College’s commitment to improving physical and mental health through community outreach programs. One such program is the Arts and Athletics Summer Camp for at-risk youth, focusing on positive youth development through arts, athletics, and college preparatory activities.

The event also allowed the College to interact with community members and the greater university community with the intention of solidifying and forging new community partnerships and friendships.

Dean Nick Mazza expects that the Social Work Scurry will become a much anticipated event every year.
