Alumna Joins College of Social Work in New Faculty Role

Jessica Griel-Burkhart

Jessica Griel-Burkhart joined the FSU College of Social Work faculty at the beginning of 2021 as an instructional specialist. This fall she will step into the the role of assistant teaching faculty with field education faculty advising undergraduate and graduate social work students as they navigate their field internships and teaching clinical social work classes.

She recalls always feeling drawn to helping others, particularly marginalized populations. “I was drawn to social work specifically because of the many different opportunities that exist to help multiple populations,” she recalls. Throughout her six years in the social work field, one of her greatest enjoyments has been her roles as an educator, supervisor and trainer.

Previously she worked with FSU Behavioral Health, the clinical arm of the FSU Mood and Anxiety Center for Excellence within the College of Medicine. She will continue working as a therapist on a clinical trial for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder through FSU Neuromodulation, a research institute at the FSU College of Medicine.

Before coming to Florida State, Greil-Burkhart served for more than two years as a Thomas County team member and internship coordinator at Georgia Pines Community Service Board in Thomasville, Georgia. Through these roles, she provided therapists, case managers and interns with daily administrative and clinical supervision. She also assisted with training throughout the agency and community and participated in policy review and accreditation services. Greil-Burkhart served in multiple roles at Georgia Pines since completing her MSW in 2015.

Greil-Burkhart also has prior experience in the university setting at Georgia State University’s Georgia Beck Initiative, partnered with the Aaron T. Beck Psychopathology Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. As a senior training specialist with the initiative, she certified clinicians in Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy for Schizophrenia.

She completed her MSW at Florida State in 2015 and a double major in psychology and sociology in 2013. Jessica is also a current graduate student with the College of Education, completing her Master of Arts focused on autism spectrum disorders with anticipated graduation in 2023.
