Victim Services Program
A free school based program for elementary, middle and high school student victims of and/or witnesses to violence. The program provides early identification, intervention, counseling, and advocacy services to children and their families. Services are provided at most Leon County public schools, during the school day in coordination with school teachers, guidance counselors and administration to best support the needs of each child.
Adult victims of violence or crime and family members may also qualify for free counseling services at Turn About through CVRR. Call for more information.
Substance Abuse Intervention/Prevention Program (SIPP)
A free school based intervention program that provides assessment, intervention, chemical education, counseling, and community referrals for middle and high school students having academic, social, or behavioral difficulties and are using, or at risk of using substances. This includes use of illegal drugs, alcohol, nicotine, and misuse of prescription or over-the-counter medications. Services are provided at most Leon County middle and high schools, and at the Turn About office.
School Suspension Assessment Program
A free program through which students may reduce the length of their out of school suspension from 10 to 5 days for substance related offenses with school administration's prior approval. Program includes a formal assessment consisting of standardized measures for substance abuse and depression, as well as an interview with a counselor for the student and his or her parent. Results of the evaluation, recommendations for treatment, and community resources/referrals will be provided in a second session following the assessment.

A free outpatient assessment provided to adolescents and their family for evaluation of behavior, depression, and potential for misuse or abuse of substances. Program includes a formal assessment consisting of standardized measures for substance abuse and depression as well as an interview with a counselor for the student and his or her parent. Results of the evaluation, recommendations for treatment, and community resources/referrals will be provided in a second session following the assessment.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
A structured after school program serving adolescents who are dealing with a severe drug/alcohol, behavioral, or emotional issue. Adolescents participate in daily intensive group therapy and weekly individual and family therapy as well as receiving one or more weekly drug screens. The program is a minimum of 20 weeks, depending on individual progress. Focus of treatment includes substance use, chemical education, anger management, healthy communication habits, social skills, academic performance, family relationships, and any other behavioral or emotional concerns affecting the adolescents and families. The program also includes a weekly parent support group in which parents learn new ways to reduce family conflict, increase healthy communication with their teens, and develop effective discipline strategies. The program fees are offered on a sliding-scale based on family income.
Outpatient Counseling
Personalized counseling is also available for adolescents or adults with additional needs at varying rates and availability. The role of the social worker is primarily clinical. assessing, engaging with, and providing intervention counseling services, referrals, evaluating services given and case management. Social Workers may also have roles of supervision and specific program design and evaluation tasks.
Intern job description:
Duties
Serve as a child advocate for students at the designated schools.
Provide educational presentations in the areas of child abuse, domestic violence, teen dating violence and other forms of victimization. in order to identify child victims and offer direct services to victims and their families.
Identify children and/or family members who are victims of crime, facilitate referral for School Assistance Program services.
Assist Intervention Counselors in providing victim support groups in the schools.
Skills Required
- Public speaking experience preferred.
- Must be a Master's level intern working on a degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work. Psychology, Education. Counseling, Criminal Justice. or similar field.
Time Commitment
- Participate in program training and weekly staff meetings when available.
- Flexible schedule during regular school hours.
Supervision
- Thorough and consistent guidance contact and schedule availability to be maintained by Program Director and appropriate Turn About, Inc. credentialed/licensed professional to meet practicum supervision
requirements.
Orientation and Training Required
- Completion of training and personnel manual reading
- Complete a background check through Turn About, Inc.
- Attend all regular staff trainings
Intern (Intensive Outpatient. Outpatient. and School Assistance) Specific Responsibilities Include:
- Provide brief assessments to students referred. This includes gathering information with regard to the student's attendance, academic performance, teacher observations, and clinical interview(s) with the student.
- Provide appropriate referrals to students and their parent(s).
- Provide individual, family, and/or group counseling to referred students and their parent(s).
- Maintain files to ensure appropriate charting requirements are satisfied.
- Ensure that Tum About procedures and policies are incorporated in the work done
- Maintain continuous contact with all assigned Leon County schools, if in the school program. Facilitate increased communication and an effective referral system.
- Maintain continuous contact with staff. school administration. guidance counselors. and school resource officers at each assigned school. agency. or community center if in the school program.
- Conduct community trainings as needed.
- Assist in marketing and promoting the services provided under the specific program.
- Maintain demographic data and disposition of all persons served under the specific program.
- Maintain monthly log of activities.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings at Turn About.
- Other duties as assigned
Supervision:
Student Interns are under the immediate supervision of the Program/Clinical Director.
Special placement information
Accepting MSW 1st-year and MSW 2nd-year/Advanced Standing (clinical) students. Full- and part-time positions available.
Transportation required. Travel reimbursement available, if funding is available. Agency accessible by public transit.
Stipend not available.
Liability insurance not required.
Video-/Audio-taping permitted with parental consent.
Agency hours: 9:00AM-6:30PM, Monday-Friday.
