WAVE offers a flexible, student-centered, project-based approach to learning for students who need an alternative to the traditional high school model. We serve over 400 at-risk teenagers through an advising model from ages 12-22 across nine different school districts. All of our students qualify as 100% at-risk. Social work is embedded within the team advisor role. Advisors engage students in the change process by initiating intake meetings and assessing for needs, setting goals and identifying resources, conducting motivational interviewing and other interventions, and assisting in transition services once students have completed their graduation requirements. The role requires advisors to be skilled at social-emotional communication, and connected to community resources to connect students with.
Washtenaw Alliance for Virtual Education is a year round school, and students can access its online curriculum any time of day. Advisors, teachers, and teacher consultants are available on-site at the Ypsilanti Lab space T-F, 9-3 p.m. Monday all staff work from home. Online office hours for assistance with individual assignments and subjects are offered throughout the evenings and weekends. Advisors are available virtually around the clock for student needs. Team advisors, online content coaches, and teachers require a Michigan Teaching License, and everyone employed requires a background check. Travel reimbursement for home visits is available.
