Information

The Advising First Center for Academic Guidance supports students in academic peril who are facing barriers to their academic success. The program emphasizes academic, social, mental, and learning factors that impact students' ability to perform well academically. Student meeting frequency is determined by their circumstances and the level of care needed to improve or mitigate challenges. Students complete an intake survey, and the academic guide uses that information to conduct a needs assessment and co-create goals. Student populations served include students who (1) earn a 0.0 GPA in their first fall semester, (2) are reinstated after dismissal, (3) have at least a one point drop in their GPA between semesters, (4) earn a GPA below 2.0 in a term but are still in good academic standing, (5) have three or more term withdrawals, and (6) are repeating a course for the third time or more. Additionally, the program accepts referrals from campus partners, including the Division of Undergraduate Studies and Counseling and Psychological Services. This internship uses a case management approach that includes proactive outreach, documentation, and campus and community resource referrals.

The Agency accepts MSW 1st year students, MSW 2nd year, and Advanced Standing Clinical, Part-time MSW. This placement is in person, so students will need reliable transportation. Also, this placement does not provide travel reimbursement. Several bus routes will bring students to the building. There may also be an opportunity for virtual work with this placement, so students will need to have a reliable electronic device they can use for internet access (including Zoom for meetings) and email access. Staff meetings are in person at the discretion of the supervisor, but they must be attended in person. A stipend is not provided for this placement, and students do not need liability insurance. Video and audio recording is permitted with advanced approval from the supervisor and student for professional and observation use only. Work hours are Monday-Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
