Florida State Hospital is a Mental Health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families.  
Florida State hospital is one of six major Mental Health treatment facilities in Florida.  It is the only state facility with both secure forensic programs and non-secure civil programs with serious mental illnesses.  
Florida State Hospital has a current operating capacity of 984 beds.  Individuals that are civilly committed are admitted either voluntarily or involuntarily under Chapter 394, Part 1 Florida Statue; also known as the Florida Mental Health Act or the Baker Act.  Everyone admitted to the forensic program is committed by a Florida Court and may come from any county in the state.  All forensic clients have been charged with felony crimes and may be deemed by the court system as incompetent to proceed or not guilty because of insanity.  
The hospital serves people 18 years and older. 
The primary role of the Social Worker is discharge planning, which involves identifying alternative living environments, securing financial benefits, and identifying barriers to discharge for individuals with acute or chronic mental illness.  The Social Worker participates in assessments, planning, and treatment regarding psychosocial stressors which affect mental illness and Mental Health, provides counseling and therapeutic sessions in accordance with the individuals recovery plans objectives and needs, consistently attends and represents clinical needs of the individual during recovery team meetings, and interact with external statewide systems on behalf of the individual.
