The purpose of hospice is to provide comprehensive care for the terminally ill within the surroundings of one's own home or home-like setting. Education, counseling, and emotional support is also available for family members during illness and after death; bereavement care afterward is a part of the scope of hospice care. In the hospice organization, social workers are employed as counselors, providing education and support about the illness and issues related to the terminal diagnosis. Another important role of the social worker is that of an advocate, both for the patient and family. Hospice of Southwest Georgia serves 12 counties in Southwest Ga.
