Counseling center description: The years of college, graduate school, and medical training can be among the most exciting and gratifying of a person's life. However, being a student can also cause significant amounts of stress and uncertainty. During these times, students may find it helpful to have additional support and encouragement. The Student Counseling Center (SCC) - Center City campus offers a variety of counseling and support services to help students in times of need. The mission of the Jefferson Counseling Center is to support the emotional health and well-being of Jefferson students and promote the overall wellness of the campus community through counseling, consultation, and outreach. Client population: Health science graduate students (students studying to become doctors, nurses, physician assistants, occupational therapists, physical therapists, marriage/family therapists, scientists, etc.)
Trainee responsibilities: Thomas Jefferson University's Student Counseling Center (SCC) seeks MSW trainees interested in engaging in direct practice with young adults/health science graduate students at our counseling center. Both first year MSW students and second year MSW students are welcome to apply. The trainee's primary role would be providing clinical care management for our student clients, which includes meeting 1:1 with clients to help them get connected to long-term therapy and/or psychiatry outside of the sec, engaging in clinical assessment, providing Motivational Interviewing, managing the SCC's referral database, and client advocacy. Trainees will have the opportunity to meet with clients 1:1 in order to understand their clinical needs and also provide support with linkage to specific services on-campus and in the community.
Trainees will work on a multidisciplinary treatment team comprised of physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, and professional counselors. Students completing this internship may also have an opportunity later in the year to provide brief therapy to our student clients depending on the SCC's clinical needs and the student's clinical readiness to provide counseling services to sec clients. The sec hopes to interview.
candidates who have a history of strong clinical experience of some kind (either from previous MSW internships or outside of their MSW programs). While providing clinical care management will be the primary role our trainees will engage in, the SCC will speak with interested candidates about additional learning interests they may have during the interview process. Please contact Shannon Skahan, LCSW via email at Shannon.skahan.@jefferson.edu for more information.
