Information

The Department of Mental Health (DMH) operates at both the macro-  and micro-level through delivering and overseeing services to over 170,000 individuals with substance use disorders, mental illness, and/or developmental disabilities throughout the State of MO.
DMH operates seven state-operated psychiatric facilities that include inpatient psychiatric care adults and children, as well as sex offender rehabilitation and treatment services. In addition, five rehabilitation centers and six regional offices serve individuals with developmental disabilities. Other services are contracted from a variety of privately operated programs statewide through approximately 1300 contracts managed annually by DMH.
Clients range from youth to senior age populations and may seek services for any of the above-mentioned categories.
For macro-level work, DMH assists in policy, planning, and administration and program development to promote care and treatment for individuals with lived experience.  DMH macro-level activities involve applying Social Work principles to working with clients at all levels including contracted agencies, grant recipients, community stakeholders, and the community at large.
At the micro-operated facilities, we use a micro-level approach of providing holistic services to individuals in need of recovery services.
DMH adheres to all federal standards and emphasizes an ethical engagement with providers, stakeholders, clients, and community members to foster growth and development and ensure effective service delivery.
