The primary function of South Central Alabama Mental Health Center (SCAMHC)is to provide services to the residents of our area with serious mental illness, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities. The Center provides mental illness services to children and adolescents and adults with a wide range of programs including outpatient, residential, and outreach services. Substance abuse services are provided through our residential program First step and an outpatient program. Services to developmentally disabled individuals are provided through day habilitation and case management services. Social worker ae integrated in every level of the organization as administrative personnel. Position negotiated with SCAMHC, Florida State University, and the student. Field practicums are usually provided in SCAMHC mental illness programs.

The agency is accepting MSW 1st year students and 2nd year and Advanced Standing students on a full and part-time basis. South Central Alabama Mental Health Cent4er (SCAMHC) is located in a rural area with very little public transportation. Students participating in placements will need their own transportation. SCAMHC does not provide stipends or travel reimbursement to field placement students. Either the student or Florida State University will provide liability insurance. Proof of liability insurance must be provided to the SCAMHC Human Resource director before the placement can begin. Students may audio tape, video tape, or process record sessions with the permission of the consumer they are working with. The videotaping, or process recording can occur. Any audio tapes, video tapes, or process recording can occur. Any audio tapes, video tapes, or process recorded notes must be returned to the supervisor and destroyed before the end of the placement. SCAMHC’s work hours for outpatient programs is 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Residential programs and some in-home programs provide services with flexible hours oar 24/7. Arrangements can be made, based on the student’s needs, for evening or weekend hours.
