The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (Commission) is an independent, bipartisan agency established by Congress and directed to study and collect information relating to discrimination or a denial of equal protection of the laws under the Constitution because of race, color,
religion, sex, age, disability, national origin, or in the administration of justice. The Advisory Committee Management Unit of the Commission manages the work and activities of the Commission’s advisory committees in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 5 U.S.
Territories. Since the Commission was created in 1957, Advisory Committees have played a vital role in serving as the “eyes and ears of the Commission.” The Committees historically have provided a mechanism for citizens and residents of the United States to testify and comment upon civil rights issues that directly impact them. With the support of regional offices, Committees have also provided forums to gather data and testimony on research completed regarding
various civil rights topics.
