Information

The mission of Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence is to create a society in which domestic violence no longer exists.
We strive to meet the immediate and long-term needs of the diverse community of battered women and their children with programs that promote safety, compassion, connection, advocacy, and prevention.
Services include an emergency safe house, 24-hour domestic violence hotline, support groups, legal advocacy, prevention and intervention and programming for children, elder abuse advocacy, basic needs assistance, transitional housing, outreach programming, community education, and more.

Intern job description:
Legal advocacy: interns learn about the civil and criminal legal systems and discuss legal rights and legal options with clients. Interns provide assistance with the writing and filing of Temporary Protective Orders and Stalking Protective Orders. Interns may also accompany petitioners to court.
Safe House: intern activities at the safe house include working one-on-one with guests, support group facilitation, and providing activities or educational opportunities for guests.
Domestic violence hotline: Safe House interns will also answer WRCDV's 24-hour domestic violence hotline. Advocates screen for appropriate admission into the safe house, offer information about WRCDV's services, provide community resource information and referrals, and safety plan with women who are in danger. Most importantly, WRCDV crisis line advocates listen compassionately and without judgement as individuals experiencing domestic violence tell their stories.
Child and family advocacy: interns at our safe house may also choose to work within the child and family advocacy program, providing afterschool activities and homework help, facilitating outings and activities for the children, working with children one-on-one, and/or providing parenting education and support to mothers. The child and family advocacy program utilizes techniques from peace education and SEE (Social Emotional and Ethical) Learning. Most importantly, interns spend time with the children developing trusting relationships and modeling healthy non-violent behavior.
Supervised visitation: interns at Nia's Place Supervised Visitation and Exchange Center will learn to supervise visits between parents who have a history of violence and their children shielding the children and custodial parents from further abusive behaviors.
Support groups: interns may undergo additional training to facilitate domestic violence support groups at the sage house at our community office.
Community awareness and outreach: interns represent the agency at local health fairs, mission fairs, town hall meetings, task force meetings, educational presentations, and in collaborations with other agencies.
Special event planning: WRCDV holds an annual fundraising luncheon and an annual community awareness event each year. Interns can help with the planning of the event, coordination of committees, solicitation of sponsorships, follow-up with corporate partners, board engagement, marketing, etc.
Media relations: during domestic violence awareness month (October), Women's Resource Center coordinates with media outlets who wish to cover issues related to domestic violence. In the months leading up to the awareness campaign, interns will attempt to establish relationships with media outlets such as newspapers (AJC and local neighborhood papers), radio stations, and television outlets. These relationships will be beneficial year-round as we respond to media coverage of domestic violence incidents and seek coverage for annual events.

Social Work students can also choose to create additional original projects to involve themselves in existing programs where applicable to the practicum objectives.
