Social Work Month: Empowering Social Workers
The month of March is Social Work Month as well as Women’s History Month. The National Association of Social Workers’ theme for 2024 is “Empowering Social Workers.”
By 2030 there will be more than 782,000 social workers in the United States, making social work one of the fastest growing professions. With this demand in mind, NASW’s theme focuses on how important it is, “for the public to support legislation and initiatives that empower and support the social work profession and improve their bottom line.”
NASW highlighted that the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the median pay for social workers in 2022 was $55,350. As many social workers must pursue in graduate-level training along with the licensure process to practice clinically, the personal investment is significant.
A National Social Work Public Opinion survey by Ipsos also indicated that more than have of respondents think social workers should receive higher pay (34% neither agree nor disagree that social workers should be paid more and only 13% disagree with higher pay).
