Welcome Jessica Greil-Burkhart to the FSU Social Work Faculty
Jessica Greil-Burkhart joins the Florida State University College of Social Work (FSU CSW) as an instructional specialist. She is a two-time FSU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology (2013) and her Master of Social Work (2015) and a licensed clinical social work in Florida and Georgia.
As an instructional specialist, Greil-Burkhart works at FSU Behavioral Health, the clinical arm of the FSU Mood and Anxiety Center of Excellence within the FSU College of Medicine, which is also an associate member of the National Network of Depression Centers. This role includes a training and supervision component. She oversees and provides clinical supervision for undergraduate and graduate social work students, trainees, interns and fellows in the helping professions. Greil-Burkhart also provides clinical services (assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic services) to individuals and families. She may also serve as a therapist for clinical trials and research studies.
“The clinic utilizes a team approach,” she explained. “I work closely with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and psychologists to ensure the best treatment outcomes for our clients.” Greil-Burkhart is excited to be a part of this brand-new clinic's growth and development, which provides community access to state-of-the-art assessment and treatment, professional training, and contributes to the understanding of mental health disorders and treatments.
She recalls always feeling drawn to helping others, particularly marginalized populations. “I was drawn to social work specifically because of the many different opportunities that exist to help multiple populations,” she recalls. Throughout her six years in the social work field, one of her greatest enjoyments has been her roles as an educator, supervisor and trainer.
“Teaching and supervising students and MSW graduates invigorates and motivates me to continue my clinical work and to look for innovative ways to contribute to the social work profession and best serve my clients,” said Greil-Burkhart. “I also benefit from working with students as they continue to teach me and help me see different perspectives that better my practice.”
Before this role at Florida State, Greil-Burkhart served for more than two years as a Thomas County team member and internship coordinator at Georgia Pines Community Service Board in Thomasville, Georgia. Through these roles, she provided therapists, case managers and interns with daily administrative and clinical supervision. She also assisted with training throughout the agency and community and participated in policy review and accreditation services. Greil-Burkhart served in multiple roles at Georgia Pines since completing her MSW in 2015.
Greil-Burkhart also has prior experience in the university setting at Georgia State University’s Georgia Beck Initiative, partnered with the Aaron T. Beck Psychopathology Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. As a senior training specialist with the initiative, she certified clinicians in Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy for Schizophrenia.
“I was specifically drawn to this role because it combines academics, research and clinical practice,” she stated. “Working with the FSU College of Social Work is also very special to me as I had fantastic professors and mentors during my time in the MSW program. They helped shape my clinical judgment, interests and knowledge. It is my hope that I can now contribute to the development and success of social workers at FSU.”
