Partnership with U.S. Peace Corps brings Coverdell Fellowship to the MSW Program
Florida State University College of Social Work in partnership with the U.S. Peace Corps will begin offering the Coverdell Fellowship in 2018 to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV) pursuing a Master of Social Work degree. It marks the first time the fellowship will be offered at Florida State in the field of social work.
The collaboration is well matched as interested Volunteers can continue their work in public service through the field of social work. Florida State University also has a long history of working with Peace Corps volunteers and appreciating the valuable skill sets these students to bring to college from their years of Peace Corps service. Since its creation, the Coverdell Fellowship has helped more than 5,000 Volunteers.
FSU College of Social Work awards a tuition credit waiver to selected Volunteers pursuing a full-time MSW program. Students are awarded an 11-hour tuition credit waiver for fall and spring semesters and a 9-hour tuition credit waiver for summer semesters. Volunteers can participate in any of the full-time MSW programs offered at FSU including the Traditional MSW Program (for students with any Bachelor’s degree), Advanced Standing MSW Program (for students with a Bachelor of Social Work degree), and Join Degree Programs (MSW/MBA, MSW/JD, MSW/MPA, MSW/MS in Criminology and Criminal Justice).
Students can choose from two tracks in their MSW Program. The MSW Clinical Track prepares students for clinical practice in social work and makes them eligible for licensure. The MSW Social Leadership concentration prepares students for leadership roles in organization or community settings, social work policy, or administrative roles in government and non-governmental organizations.
Advanced-Standing MSW students must complete a minimum of 512 hours in a social work internship. Traditional MSW students must complete a minimum of 944 hours over two internships. Interns are placed with local public or nonprofit organizations with a variety of populations. The internship site depends on the student’s program of study and personal experiences and interests.
Fall semester applications are due June 1st, and spring semester applications are due by October 1st. Interested applicants can learn more at https://csw.fsu.edu/coverdell-fellowship or contact Director of the MSW Program Fran Gomory at (850) 644-9751, (800) 378-9550 or via email at fgomory@fsu.edu.
