The Girl Scouts of Gateway Council’s Get REAL! is a gender responsive program providing mentoring and life skills coursework for at-risk girls age 11–15.
Girls are referred through their school guidance counselors, teachers, principals and assistant principals. Participants of Get REAL! are at-risk girls based on one or more identified risk factors including:
• One or more grade levels behind in school
• Scored a Level I or Level II in FCAT reading
• High absenteeism
• Extensive disciplinary referrals
• Extensive exclusionary disciplinary sanctions
• Familial factors- incarceration, absenteeism, social mobility, socio-economic status etc.
• Mental/Behavioral health factors
The Social Work Intern’s role with Get REAL! would be to assist with the development of curriculum and subsequent life skills activities using research-based prevention programming to address and mitigate factors which may contribute to undesirable outcomes. The Social Work interns along with the Girl Scouts of Gateway Council will partner with schools, community organizations, law enforcement agencies and local government to provide prevention and early intervention programming that seeks to divert girls from the juvenile system and guides them towards a path of academic success, leadership, civic engagement and financial literacy. The Social Work Intern will also complete an agency analysis to develop a critical evaluation of the agency to understand the administrative components of the non-profit sector.
