New Image Youth Center is an after school and summer camp program serving youth from kindergarten through age 24 in Orlando's Historic Parramore Neighborhood for 18 years.
All services are founded in these pillars: Academic Support, Social Development, Health and Fitness, Crisis Intervention, and Social Justice.
Led by our Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Shanta Barton-Stubbs, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with certification in Play Therapy, we are a trauma-informed youth social service center with a strong focus on mentoring and therapeutic activities and play. We have earned a strong reputation as a support not just for our youth, but for their families and our surrounding community. For our youth and families, this support includes: attendance at school meetings as requested, lunchtime school visits that encourage youth and promote working relationships with their teachers, and individual, group, and family counseling.
Intern job description:
Direct clinical: under general supervision of a LMHC, the general direction of the intern is to assist and provide Mental Health services and social emotional skills training to parents and students. This may also include counseling and consulting to assist in meeting the social emotional needs of students at New Image Youth Center.
Other key responsibilities:
- Consult with teaches, administrators, specialists, agency, and parents
- Counsel students; coordinate behavior management program
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Identify and implements age and need appropriate Mental Health services including classroom lessons, small group interventions, individual counseling, and behavior coaching
- Develop student goals and objectives
- Participate in IEP meetings, as required
- Provide written reports analyzing, interpreting, and summarizing observations and information from school personnel, students, and parents
- Act as liaison between school and after school program
- Develop, coordinate and provide in-service training to staff, parents
- Maintain professional competencies in areas of responsibility
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Non direct: interns can be used in different capacities at New Image Youth Center and can be responsible for implementing daily after-school and summer program activities for youth in grades 1-12. The intern will assist in developing weekly plans for engaging and agency-appropriate activities, and works in conjunction with NIYC administration to ensure program goals are met. The intern provides leadership to volunteer while maintaining a safe program environment and adhering to NIYC rules and regulations.
Key responsibilities:
- Plan and implement a schedule of academic, recreational, social, and enrichment activities
- Work closely with other teaching staff and program volunteers to ensure a high standard of program services of youth
- Establish program objectives that are consistent with organizational goals and mission
- Maintain required records and reports including activities and events conducted, daily participation figures, notable achievements, and any problems/issues
- Assist with scheduling of volunteers
- Maintain environment that attends to the health and safety of youth
- Demonstrate leadership and classroom management skills
- Work with parents or school leadership as needed
- Teach life skills and/or social emotional skills on and off site
- Attend school meetings and advocate for youth whom we serve
Special placement information:
Accepting MSW 1st-year students. Full- and part-time positions available.
Population: primarily serve African and Haitian American youth in an area known for high rates of crime, poverty, mental illness, and housing insecurity.
Student should be aware of the possibility of exposure to COVID-19 and assume responsibility for taking preventative measures according to their own needs.
Video-/Audio-taping permitted with appropriate permissions.
Agency hours: 1:30PM-6:30PM, Monday-Friday during the school year. 8:30AM-4:00PM, Monday-Friday during summer camp. Weekend and evening hours may be available.
Transportation required.
