Rc5-Offices of Criminal Conflict and Civil Regional Counsel in Casselberry, Florida.
RC5 is a state agency in Casselberry, Florida, which provides legal defense representation to indigent persons in a wide array of constitutional and statutory actions, with one of its primary practice areas being the representation of parents in dependency court proceedings. The Social Services Unit at RC5 was created to enhance the legal representation being provided to parents during dependency proceedings.
We are taking interns for two different programs: BSW Dependency guardianships and MSW post-sentencing support. The interns will be placed in an interdisciplinary setting as an integral member of RC5's legal team working to support the client's rights and enhancing the legal advocacy asserted on the client's behalf in dependency proceedings. A field placement in this setting would allow for the development of the intern's clinical and interpersonal skills through activities such as: conducting independent client assessments, interfacing with the state's Department of Children and Families (DCF) and other community-based care providers, assisting attorneys to promote plans for services well-tailored to the client's needs and betterment, monitoring and assisting the client's progress throughout a case, and advocating for the client's interests in a variety of settings and forums.
This field placement would also most likely deepen and expand an intern's knowledge of the judicial system and local resources, as well as provide experiences in clinical areas such as substance use, mental illness, and trauma. A student chosen for this field placement would need to exhibit strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team setting, and a shared commitment to a client-centered legal representation.

Intern job description:
- Client needs assessment and response. Interagency partnerships, referrals, community-client relations. Knowledge of problem-solving techniques, motivational interviewing, interdisciplinary team, good oral writing and communication skills.
- Clients who have previously unaddressed trauma, bereavement issues, under-treated Mental Health issues, or secondary substance use issues that the BSW/MSW could provide support and appropriate referrals for the client.
- Clients wish limited support networks that are at increased risk of violating probation where the BSW/MSW could be able to help support the client and develop positive social networks.
- Clients with vocational/employment needs/educational goals where the BSW/MSW would be able to help link with services such as vocational rehabilitation, GED programs, provide help (directly or through local programs) to work on resumes, interviewing skills, help locate job fairs, etc.
- Clients that have basic or concrete needs that will potentially impact their ability to navigate probation successfully, such as missing vital documents, housing needs, help with basic needs, or other needs the BSW/MSW could help obtain/navigate.
- Clients who are young adults or have learning/intellectual disabilities that may impact their ability to manage probation independently would benefit from BSW/MSW support.
- Clients who would need assistance with organization to manage tasks that, if neglected, would likely lead to non-criminal violations of probation.
