The Victim/ Witness Assistance Program provides emotional support and court-related
advocacy to victims of crime from the time of the arrest through sentencing. Caseload
consists of victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse, survivors of
homicide, DUI crashes, aggravated battery, armed robbery, and home invasion. Advocates
provide crisis intervention and supportive counseling throughout CJS process. Also,
provide case updates, explain CJS and victim’s rights, community referral, court
preparation, and accompaniment. Serve as liaison between prosecutor and victim.
Intern Job Description:
Student interns participate in 2-4 week training period reviewing written materials,
meeting with each staff member, and shadowing us both in the courtroom and in the
office. Students learn how to run daily morning docket to identify new violent crime
cases and make First Contact with the crime victim. Students then attend First
Appearance hearings each morning and update victims afterwards. Students then work
with Task Supervisor to learn about our work with Domestic Violence Survivors. They
observe several in person intake interviews and begin taking active role in interviews
with goal of being able to successfully complete one independently. Interns also are
provided opportunities to observe and assist with trials and hearings.
Special Placement Information:
BSW and MSW Students. Part-time and Full-time Positions available. Agency hours are
Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00 PM. Students may stay after hours to observe trials or wait with
the victim for a verdict but are not required to do so (No weekends). All students must pass
a criminal history check. No transportation is required. Courthouse is accessible by bus. No
stipends, no insurance needed, no audio or videotaping permitted. The agency supervisor
is a BSW from FSU; the task supervisor is a MSW from FSU.
