Academic Leadership Awards: Leadership on and off campus

Academic leadership takes many forms. Two FSU College of Social Work students exemplify the abilities and talents necessary for a student to excel and to exemplify leadership on and off campus. MSW student Mandi Cauley and BSW student Zoe Genkin were awarded 2017 Academic Leadership Awards that were celebrated during the spring 2017 semester, each receiving an award for this honor.

The Institute for Family Violence Studies (IFVS) at the College of Social Work benefits from the tremendous talent and energy of student researchers who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of children and families. “The Institute could not operate without these rockstars. Each one made a significant contribution to building the IFVS,” said Karen Oehme, IFVS Director.  In return, the Institute launches these graduates into a lifetime of meaningful work.

FSU College of Social Work holds annual Spring Convocation and Pinning Ceremony

May 5, 2017, the College of Social Work celebrated its most recent class of social work graduates in the Oglesby Union Ballrooms. More than 700 people attended the annual event to witness the graduation of 38 BSWs, 54 MSWs, and one doctoral student, Stephanie Grace Prost.

FSU Students Participate in LEAD 2017

More than 100 FSU College of Social Work students participated in the National Association of Social Worker’s Florida (NASW-FL) LEAD Days centered on legislative education. Students attended the NASW-FL’s rally at the Tallahassee Automotive Museum on April 3rd, listening to inspiring speakers and getting geared up for the legislative day the next morning.  Students showed up at Florida’s Capitol on April 4th to attend hearings focused on ethics and the judiciary.

Social Work Dean Emeritus honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

A poet and a writer since adolescence, Dr. Nick Mazza was working in the maintenance department of a hospital in New Jersey putting himself through college when he noticed an article in Time magazine on poetry therapy. His curiosity piqued, he wrote to one of the national leaders in poetry therapy, attended a national conference in Brooklyn and found himself hooked. He approached the medical director of the hospital about reading poetry to patients, and the director introduced him to the hospital’s social services department.

Biden Foundation brings on FSU alumna and former Obama White House expert

FSU alumna Lynn Rosenthal (BSW, 1980) and another former Obama White House expert, Gautam Raghavan are being hired by the Biden Foundation. The Foundation was created to build on the Biden family’s long-standing work including violence against women, cancer, community colleges and equality.

Social Work Professor Keynote Speaker at International Social Work Conference

“If too many of you fall asleep, I will stop talking and leave the podium. In fact, if you close your eyes I will take that to mean that you are letting me know that I should end my presentation immediately” joked Associate Professor Dr. Tomi Gomory, in his keynote address at an international conference held April 7-8, 2017.
