May 5, 2017, the College of Social Work celebrated its most recent class of social work graduates in the Oglesby Union Ballrooms. More than 700 people attended the annual event to witness the graduation of 38 BSWs, 54 MSWs, and one doctoral student, Stephanie Grace Prost.

FSU Autism Clinic expands services through new partnerships

Five-year-old Jasper Geisz smiles as he clicks the small motorized fan off and on. Jasper loves fans and anything electrical.
He has a big toothless grin, not unlike any other child his age, except he’s not like any other neurotypical child — Jasper is autistic. He was diagnosed about two years ago by psychologists at the Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinic housed in Florida State University’s Multidisciplinary Center. The center operates under the purview of the FSU College of Social Work.

FSU Students Advocate for Social Work at LEAD 2017

More than 100 FSU College of Social Work students participated in the National Association of Social Worker’s Florida (NASW-FL) LEAD (Legislative, Education and Advocacy Day). Students attended the NASW-FL’s rally at the Tallahassee Automotive Museum on April 3rd, listening to inspiring speakers and getting geared up for the legislative day the next morning. Students showed up at Florida’s Capitol on April 4th to attend hearings focused on ethics and the judiciary.

A poet and a writer since adolescence, Dr. Nick Mazza was working in the maintenance department of a hospital in New Jersey putting himself through college when he noticed an article in Time magazine on poetry therapy. His curiosity piqued, he wrote to one of the national leaders in poetry therapy, attended a national conference in Brooklyn and found himself hooked. He approached the medical director of the hospital about reading poetry to patients, and the director introduced him to the hospital’s social services department.

Biden Foundation brings on FSU alumna and former Obama White House expert

FSU alumna Lynn Rosenthal (BSW, 1980) and another former Obama White House expert, Gautam Raghavan are being hired by the Biden Foundation. The Foundation was created to build on the Biden family’s long-standing work including violence against women, cancer, community colleges and equality.

Social Work Professor Keynote Speaker at International Social Work Conference

The NASW-Florida Big Bend Unit celebrated the annual Social Work Month with an Awards Breakfast on March 28th in the center of the current Florida legislative session on the 22nd floor of the Florida Capitol building. People gathered to honor a select group of social workers and community members that have exemplified service and leadership in the Big Bend community.
