A new institute launched at Florida State University aims to improve the lives of children and their families who rely on out-of-home care. The Institute for Quality Children’s Services will be housed within the College of Social Work’s Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families, and Children. The institute’s objective is to make scientifically supported strategies addressing urgent behavioral health needs accessible and implementable for service providers and child-serving systems.

Years after Hurricane Michael devastated Florida’s Gulf Coast, residents of that area still struggle to overcome the trauma of the Category 5 storm. 

In a recent study, FSU researchers found that trauma and a host of psychosocial and physical challenges caused by Hurricane Michael disproportionately affect the region’s Black communities.  

In September of 2022, the Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families, and Children (CFC Center) at the FSU College of Social Work was awarded a two-year U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant funding the Southeast Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center (ROTA-RC).

Hundreds of children in Florida are removed from their homes each year due to child welfare reports and investigations. In 2020, the State of Florida reported 28,268 child welfare cases.

A $1.3 million grant will fund a project in the Florida State University College of Social Work that aims to combat the opioid epidemic across eight southeastern states.

The two-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will go to the Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families and Children (CFC Center). It will target 168 rural counties across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

A new partnership between the Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities Families and Children at Florida State University and UF Health at the University of Florida aims to improve outcomes for pediatric transplant patients and their families.

The Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families, and Children (CFC Center) at the FSU College of Social Work is helping families prepare for natural disasters in Calhoun County, Florida. During three events this summer, the center joined community organizations to deliver three emergency preparation rallies, or “prep rallies” at local libraries and schools.

The Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families and Children at the FSU College of Social Work has teamed up with the Community Foundation for Palm Beach Counties and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County to tackle pandemic-related mental health challenges for local children and adolescents.

Online MSW student Lara Klopp began working with the Center for the Study and Promotion for Communities, Families and Children at the FSU College of Social Work in 2021 to complete her social work field internship. One of her key assignments included working with pre-Kindergarten (pre-K) students in Brevard County, Florida, utilizing the center’s Rebound and Recovery program, a socio-emotional learning program piloted with pre-K through third-grade children.

The increasing frequency of natural catastrophes and their uneven impact on vulnerable populations calls for the development of disaster Resiliency Hubs. Now, through a grant from the National Science Foundation, a multidisciplinary team of Florida State University researchers is looking to utilize a commonly underrecognized space in disaster response: public libraries.
