College of Social Work Honors 2021 Distinguished Graduates and Scholarship Award Winners
The FSU College of Social Work hosted its 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award and Student Scholarship event on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.
The virtual event honored more than 120 student scholars. Over $128,000 in awards were given to support FSU College of Social Work (CSW) students with focuses including international programs, child welfare, social policy and military veterans.
The event was hosted by CSW Dean Jim Clark and faculty members Carol Campbell Edwards, Keithen Mathis, and Vicky Verano, who serve on the college’s Student Affairs Committee.
Faculty Highlight: La Tonya Noël, A Focus on Child Trauma and Wellbeing
Dr. La Tonya Noël began her career at the College of Social Work in 2007 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2014.
Online Curriculum on Race, Class and Health Disparities Developed by the FSU Institute for Justice Research and Development
The Florida State University Institute for Justice Research and Development (IJRD) launched a new online curriculum with continuing education units for social workers, mental health field professionals, researchers, administrators, and support staff working within the criminal justice system or with individuals who have incarceration experience. Professionals seeking to engage more responsively with many different populations in the criminal justice system can immediately apply this knowledge to their work.

Johnathon Alleman joined the US Navy in 2006 for a five-year tour of duty, serving within the special operations community before returning to civilian life in 2011 to pursue higher education and other opportunities. Dr. Kia Bentley (PhD, 1987), professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), was awarded by the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work (GADE) the 2021 GADE Award for Education Leadership in Doctoral Education.
Faculty Highlight: Katrina Boone, 20 Years with the College of Social Work
For more than twenty years, Katrina Boone has served as a faculty member at the FSU College of Social Work (CSW). She began her career at the CSW in August 2001 as a lecturer teaching classes for the BSW and MSW programs. After two years as a lecturer, Katrina was promoted to assistant director of Field Education. In 2005, Katrina became the director of Field Education and has served in this position for 16 years.

Interdisciplinary Research Team Receives NSF Grant to Study Pandemic Impacts on Natural Disaster Shelters
Florida State University (FSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU) received a National Science Foundation, Excellence in Research Historically Black College and University Grant of more than $500,000. The grant will allow the interdisciplinary research team to study how to better prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters that co-occur with public health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic.
