FSU Social Work Scholar Leads Anthropology-Social Work Research Group

Assistant Professor John Mathias has a unique approach to social work. At the FSU College of Social Work, he uses research approaches from both anthropology and social work to address his research areas of interest.  Dr. Mathias earned his doctoral degree from the University of Michigan where he was able to combine these two passions.

Alumna answers the call for help in times of crises

Alumna Machelle Madsen Thompson is known at the FSU College of Social Work, where she is a researcher and adjunct professor, and in the local community for her multi-faceted community outreach. This fall, Dr. Thompson was on the front line for two major events in the Tallahassee area, assisting with recovery after both Hurricane Michael and the mass shooting at a yoga studio in Tallahassee, Florida.

FSU Social Work Honors its Fall 2018 Graduates

The College of Social Work ended the semester with a graduation reception for its Fall 2018 graduates and their guests at the Oglesby Union Ballrooms. The reception celebrated 5 BSWs, 57 MSWs, and 1 Ph.D. graduate. The event’s program featured remarks by Dean Jim Clark, Reception Speaker Dana Brooks, and Student Speaker and MSW Graduate Amanda Nicole Sholty.

University of Houston offers support after Hurricane Michael

If it’s one thing the University of Houston and the Florida State University have in common, it’s understanding the havoc that a hurricane can wreak. The coastlines of both Texas (Hurricane Harvey, 2017) and Florida’s panhandle (Hurricane Irma, 2017; Hurricane Michael, 2018) have been hit by major storms just in the last two years.

Two FSU Social Work Alumnae Among FSU’s 2018 Notable Noles

The FSU Alumni Association honored its 2018 cohort of Notable Noles and its three 2018 Reubin O’D. Askey Young Alumni Award recipients in November at their annual Young Alumni Awards Dinner. Among this year’s Notable Noles are two FSU College of Social Work graduates, Sabrina Kinslow, and Tiffanie Williams.

Social Work Faculty Member Honored by Transformation Through Teaching Program

Ten Florida State University faculty members were honored by the Transformation Through Teaching program for their actions to foster meaning and purpose among their students. Students nominated faculty members and selected by FSU’s Spiritual Life Project and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching based upon students’ meaningful stories.
